Apple has revealed a new Apple TV 4K streaming device, which boasts a whole host of upgrades including a powerful A12 Bionic chip, higher frame rates, a new Siri voice remote, among others. According to Apple, the new streaming device will be available to order in late May.
While there are several changes with the new Apple TV 4K, it still shares a few things in common with the old Apple TV 4K such as the dimensions and weight.
That said if you already own the old model and you’re wondering whether it’s worth upgrading to the new model or just don’t know which one to choose, read on for our full comparison.
The first notable difference between the two Apple TV 4K streaming devices is the processor. The new Apple TV 4K features an upgraded A12 Bionic CPU while its predecessor has the A10X. The new processor delivers lots of horsepowers, allowing for a better experience while gaming on your Apple TV. The faster processor also means you get a swifter response when navigating the user menu and smoother loading times. The A12 processor is 50% faster than the A11 processor.
High frame rate
While the old Apple TV supports 4K HDR video at 30 fps, the new model features a higher frame rate of up to 60 fps for HDR and Dolby Vision video. This gives you a smoother gaming and more realistic viewing experience. This also means that you can Airplay Dolby Vision video at 60 fps to the box using your iPhone 12.
HDMI 2.1 and Wi-Fi 6
Another major improvement with the new Apple TV 4K is the HDMI 2.1 port compared to the HDMI 2.0 of the previous model. The upgraded HDMI 2.1 port promises to the bandwidth from only 18 Gbps up to an impressive 48 Gbps. This improves the quality of streamed content on your Apple TV as well as iTunes 4K content.
On top of that, the new Apple TV 4K supports Wi-Fi 6, allowing you to take advantage of faster internet speeds and ensure a solid connection between your wireless router and your Apple TV box.
Another key upgrade of the new Apple TV 4K is the new color balancing feature, which utilizes your iPhone’s color sensor to automatically calibrate the box’s video output, enhancing your TV picture. This way, you get to enjoy the best picture from your TV, without the need to hire a professional to calibrate it.
The new Siri remote is undoubtedly one of the biggest improvements from the 2017 Apple TV 4K. The new Siri remote sports a sleek, one-piece aluminum design with a redesigned 5-way touchpad. The new touchpad gives you more control and flexibility when navigating.
The Siri button on the new remote has been moved to the side and has dedicated power and volume buttons, allowing you to conveniently turn on or adjust the volume on your smart TV, AV system, or soundbar.
The Menu button is now renamed to a simple back button on the new remote and doesn’t come with the 3-way gyroscope and accelerometer found on the old Siri remote. Just like the old remote, the new one comes with a Lightning cable for charging.
Featuring higher HDR frame rates, a new Siri remote and snappy performance, the new Apple TV 4K stands out as a high-end streaming device that ensures you get maximum value for your money.a
